What is Orion's Belt?

Orion's Belt is part of a larger constellation called The Hunter. Orion is a very prominent and popular constellation, perhaps being the best-known and most conspicuous constellation in the sky. Orion's three "belt" stars are found on the celestial equator and are visible throughout the worlds. The three belt stars are of medium brightness and are the medium part of the constellation. In mid-northern latitudes, the constellation is visible in the evening from October to early January, and in the morning from lat July to November.

Orion is not the only name for The Hunter. In Australia the belt and sword of Orion are sometimes called the Saucepan. It is called the Drie Konings (Three Kings) by Afrikaans and Trois Rois (The Three Kings) by the French. Both of these names are founds in 17th and 18th century seaman's guides. Historically it is also referred to as Babylonian "Shepherd of Anu."

Orion's Belt was configured roughly 1.5 million years ago due to the relatively slow movements of the stars within the constellation. Orion is estimated to remain visible for the next one to two million years. This makes it one of the longest observable constellations parallel to the rise of human civilization.

Because of the correlation between Orion's age and the birth of human civilization, Orion is recognizable throughout mythology. The three stars of Orion's Belt were at one point associated with Osiris, the god of death and the underworld by the ancient Egyptians. Sumerians saw this patter as part of a shepherd or chariot while in China Orion was on e of the twenty eight lunar mansions.

References in the ancient Middle East were to the best and sword, which echoes throughout modern western literature.

Towards the very front of a ship stands a vigilant sailor who keeps a constant bird's eye on the blurry line of the horizon. The long metal tube that is known as a telescope is perched in one of his eyes as he scans the sea with it. On the horizon he may see many things - the beginnings of a far off storm, or a long string of glaciers. Whirlpools are notoriously hard to see on the horizon, but a skilled sailor, with the help of a telescope, most certainly can pick them out without trouble. When sailing before the advent of GPS, the telescope was an indispensable tool for a sailor. When sailing on a ship today, many bring telescopes along with them as necessities and for safety.

The antique telescope is wonderful at maintaining its shape and sparkle even over countless years of stress and use. Most of these antique telescopes are made of brass or bronze, a common metal used in nautical instruments. The salty spray of the ocean does not corrode brass as it does other metals. These telescopes are known for shining and sparkling in the sun even when they haven't been polished for many years. Brass ages but does not dull as many other metals do. Brass reacts well to touch, and absorbs oils on human skin in order to shine and retain its beautiful golden luster. Creating antique telescopes in the past was an expensive business, and as such only captains and quartermasters would carry a telescope as it was far too valuable to trust in the hands of other sailors. Because of this scarcity, viewing a vista through a captain's telescope was often deemed a privilege. Often, a backup telescope would be stowed somewhere within the captain's cabin. One useful addition to the telescope came in the form of a small string that wrapped around both the telescope and the hand of the viewer, thereby securing it so the tool did not fall into the ocean.

Antique telescopes make wonderful installments in any room of the house or office, and they are slender enough to fit almost anywhere. It is very common for antique telescopes to fold and retract into themselves in a cylinder that is even smaller. These tubes are usually no more than four inches thick, perfect for carrying. Other telescopes do not retract at all, and should not be forced.

Overall, these items are beautifully crafted works of art that have rich histories and backgrounds. Though these items may always seem as though they are shining, some small dirt or rust patches may actually add to its rustic, antique feel.

One of the most fascinating properties of the parabola is its reflective property, which is as follows: If a light source is placed at the focus of a parabola, after reflecting off the parabola, the rays of light will emerge as a correlated beam with all rays parallel to the symmetry axis of the parabola. Similarly, a parallel beam of light rays incident on a parabola will converge onto the focus after being reflected.

The three-dimensional analog of the reflective property of a parabola is realized for a paraboloid, the surface formed by rotating a parabola about its axis of symmetry. It is this property that is used in flashlights, headlights, and searchlights. In all of these devices, a point light source is placed at the focus of a parabolic mirror, resulting in a correlated beam of light emerging along the symmetry axis of the device. The opposite property is utilized in satellite dishes and reflecting telescopes, each of which involves a signal converging on the focus after being reflected.

Other conic sections enjoy reflective properties similar to the parabola. For instance, if a light source is placed at one focus of an ellipse, the rays will converge onto the other focus after being reflected. Any wave, including sound waves, may be substituted for light. Thus, a whispering gallery is an elliptic room in which sound waves converge onto a focus after emerging from a source at the other focus. A hyperbola also satisfies an interesting reflective property in which a point source at one focus, after being reflected, behaves as if it were at the other focus.

The first inhabitants of the world were compelled to accommodate their acts to the daily and annual alternations of light and darkness and of heat and cold. In history there are only a few distinguished men who made such a big contribution to astronomy, one of them was Galileo Galilei and his work with the telescope.

When we look at today's telescopes we mainly are working with either Galileo's telescope or Newton's telescope. These men made such a big impact in astronomy and telescopes, that we still use the same types of telescopes invented by these men!

Galileo or his full name Galileo Galilei was an Italian physicist and astronomer. Galileo was born in Pisa on 15 February 1564 and lived 78 years till 1642 when he passed away. In this time he made such advancement in astronomy, that we still know the name Galileo.

Galileo not only made advancements in astronomy, he is also noted with the invention of the thermometer! Galileo Galilei telescope was the first to make observations of the Moon and its crescents, the Sun, planets and stars.

Most of Galileo's time and energy was in mathematics and that is what he spent most of his time. In fact he became professor of mathematics at the University of Pisa in 1589. What made Galileo change from mathematics and physics to a big interest in astronomy was when he heard about the invention of the telescope in Holland in 1609.

From this date, Galileo immediately focused his attention on building his own telescope. Galileo Galilei telescope was put together and he immediately started viewing the heavens. He published his findings in Sidereus Nuncius. The Starry Messenger one year later in 1610. The book was such a sensation throughout Europe that it made Galileo and his telescope famous.

Galileo Galilei telescope and his findings did not always go so rosy however. At that time the common idea held by the church was that the universe revolved around the Earth! Copernicus had a new theory, the Copernican theory that said that the universe does not revolve around the Earth. Galileo held this belief as well, and it caused major outrage with the church. The church declared the view heretical and Galileo was instructed to abandon the Copernican theory.

In 1632 a book was published called Dialogue Concerning The Two Chief World Systems. In the book the Galileo Galilei telescope was used to make the evidence of how the view adopted by the church was wrong. It resulted to Galileo being sentenced to life imprisonment. The sentence was commuted to house arrest for the rest of his life.

Galileo was a great inventor and has given the world some of the greatest inventions. In a Galileo Galilei telescope, the light enters through a tube starting with a convex objective lens. The light focuses even more with a concave lens in the eyepiece, before meeting the eye with a magnified and upright image.

Galileo Galilei telescope is one which we can never forget. It was an invention which showed at his time a planet (Saturn), one which has ears! Within 2 years of the invention of Galileo's telescope, he gave us fairly accurate information on the orbits of 4 of Jupiter's satellites. Galileo also gave us great information on the Sunspots on the sun.
